Special Location Appointments

Some families choose to say goodbye in a place that was meaningful to their pet, such as a favorite beach, park, hiking trail, barn, pasture, garden, or other outdoor location. These appointments can be beautiful and memorable, but they may require additional planning and flexibility.

Please consider how your pet will arrive at the location and how they will be transported afterward if cremation services are requested. Uneven ground, stairs, long walking distances, narrow trails, soft sand, mud, steep slopes, docks, and other obstacles can make transportation difficult.

If your pet is unable to walk independently, family assistance may be required to safely move them before or after the appointment.

For larger pets, a location that allows vehicle access as close as possible to the euthanasia site is preferred.

Outdoor appointments are subject to weather conditions. Excessive heat, cold, rain, wind, snow, smoke, flooding, or other environmental hazards may affect the appointment or require a change of location. If conditions are unsafe for your pet, your family, or myself, we may need to modify plans on the day of the visit.

Please have an alternate indoor or sheltered location available whenever possible.

If the appointment is taking place in a public area, please understand that members of the public may be present. Although every effort will be made to maintain privacy and dignity, it may not be possible to prevent others from observing portions of the appointment, asking questions, approaching, or passing nearby.

Many families find that selecting a quieter location or time of day helps create a more peaceful experience.

The family is responsible for obtaining any permissions required to access or use a property or location. Certain parks, beaches, public lands, private facilities, homeowner associations, or managed properties may have restrictions regarding euthanasia, burial, vehicle access, or transportation of deceased animals.

If burial is planned, it is the owner's responsibility to verify that burial is permitted and that all local regulations, environmental restrictions, and property requirements have been met.

While every effort is made to provide a peaceful passing, outdoor and remote locations can present additional challenges. Wind, temperature extremes, uneven terrain, limited lighting, environmental distractions, and reduced access to equipment may occasionally prolong portions of the procedure.

Some pets may also be more alert, excited, anxious, or stimulated in outdoor environments than they would be at home. Additional time for sedation or additional medications may occasionally be needed.

In cold weather especially, the body uses methods to conserve heat that result in increased difficulty accessing veins to administer medication. Pet who are sedated are also less able to control their body temperature and can easily overheat in direct sunlight.

The safety and comfort of your pet remain the highest priority. In rare situations, medical, environmental, logistical, or safety concerns may require adjustments to the original plan, including changing locations, modifying transportation arrangements, or altering the procedure to ensure a peaceful and humane experience.
